Between the ancient ritual of lacquer and the immediacy of oil — paintings that carry silence, depth, and fire.

The Artist

A hand guided
by ancient craft

I am Binh — a 21-year-old Vietnamese fine artist working between two worlds: the visceral gesture of oil painting, and the layered, meditative ritual of lacquer painting (sơn mài).

Sơn mài demands patience that oil does not — each layer coated, left to cure, sanded back into light. The final image is not painted on the surface but revealed from within it. My oil works carry the opposite energy: alive, immediate, searching.

Both practices share one obsession: depth.

"Painting is the silence of thought and the music of sight."

The Practice

How a painting comes to life

I
Observation

Every work begins before a brush is lifted — in the act of watching: light on skin, water on lacquer, the weight of stillness. The first sketch holds nothing but attention.

II
Material

For oil, I build in transparent layers, each one altering the one before. For lacquer, I coat and sand in cycles — the depth appears only through repetition and patience, never through haste.

III
Revelation

What remains is what was always there beneath. The painting is not made — it is uncovered. The artist's hand simply removes what should not be seen.

Every painting has a life before the canvas is finished — and that life is worth watching. My channel documents the full arc of making: the first brush strokes, the layers of lacquer being sanded into light, the moments of doubt, and the ones of sudden clarity.

No shortcuts shown. No tutorial narration. Just the real process of a 21-year-old artist learning what the materials want to say.
